What is Prophecy

According to the Bible

The inspired foretelling of events based on the following Scriptures.

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that NO PROPHECY of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 1 Peter 1:19-21

Characteristics of prophecy

Biblical prophecy IS NOT 'personal prophecy.'

True prophecy is based on

False prophecy is evidenced by

Fullfillment of prophecy

Two Examples of "sometimes conditional" prophecies

The first misconception people have about prophecies is they say "Well, prophecies are conditional." People rationalize everything that does not come to pass and yet they say this does not mean the person is not a real 'prophet.' Well, yes it does.

Most prophecies ARE NOT conditional, only a few. Let's take a look at the rare exceptions. Read these verses again. Pay attention!

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Peter 1:20-21

This means that prophecy was not given for personal gain or selfish desires.

Jonah's prophecy was conditional. If the people "REPENTED" then God would not destroy the city of Nineveh. The people did repent and so God did not destroy the city. [Read Jonah 3Bible quote(verse 1) And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,

(verse 2) Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

(verse 3) So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.

(verse 4) And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

(verse 5) So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

(verse 6) For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered [him] with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

(verse 7) And he caused [it] to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:

(verse 8) But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that [is] in their hands.

(verse 9) Who can tell [if] God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

(verse 10) And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did [it] not.Jonah 3
]

A second example was Sodom and Gomorrah. If God could find just ONE righteous person then He would not destroy the city. Since not even ONE righteous person was found the city was destroyed. [Read Genesis 18 - Genesis 19]

What is the difference between 'biblical prophecy' and 'fortune telling'

Biblical prophecy deals with the future events foretold in the Bible- the rapture of the church, the 7 year tribulation period, the mark of the beast, the judgment seat of Christ, the great white throne judgment, heaven, hell, the millennial reign, and eternity.

Fortune telling is when people speak from their own minds, their own dreams, and most often there are evil spirits revealing misleading information; personal prophecies that God never spoke usually about money coming your way, or about one's love life- mates, spouses, worldly issues, things of the flesh, etc. It is usually something that sounds good but it is all lies. Listening to or accepting these false prophecies will eventually result in destruction. Worse yet, if a person refuses to acknowledge the danger in this and turn away from it then the Bible says that the Lord will send strong delusion to the person so they may not be able to believe or accept the truth 2 Thessalonians 2Bible quote(verse 11) And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

(verse 12) That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.2 Thessalonians 2 verses 11-12
.

The Bible makes it clear that no one knows the future except for God alone, the Creator of the Universe who made us.
