COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police said that 25 people were arrested early Sunday morning near the Ohio State University campus as some parties got out of control. Shortly after midnight, someone, somewhere, apparently crossed a line and others soon followed, NewsChannel 4's John Ivanic reported.

University officials said that some of the parties began to get out of control, spilling onto the sidewalks and streets. Some students were seen on top of cars. Police, in riot gear, marched from Summit Street west to Chittenden Avenue, Ivanic reported. At Indianola Avenue, police paused and put on gas masks, Ivanic reported. Minutes later, the first blasts of tear gas sent the crowd scurrying.

"I'm disappointed, I'm angry, I'm frustrated," OSU vice president of student affairs Bill Hall said. "There are a lot of emotions that are going through my mind right now."

For the next hour, police cleared nearby streets, sidewalks and porches, while making arrests along the way, Ivanic reported. Most students that Ivanic talked with blamed police for escalating the matter.

"I can understand why police are taking an aggressive stance," OSU student Neal Patel said. "It's obvious the students are somewhat hostile, but I believe the police are somewhat hostile as well."

Last April, repeated trouble off campus resulted in dozens of arrests on consecutive weekends. During last year's trouble of campus, a handful of local businesses stopped selling beer and other alcoholic drinks in bottles. Ivanic said that campus officials were examining that option, in hopes that the same scene would not be repeated next weekend. Hall said that he believed Columbus police were "extremely restrained" in their handling of the situation.

Following last year's disturbances, OSU officials adopted disciplinary measures that included immediate suspension of students whose parties became too rowdy, News Channel 4 reported. The suspension prohibits students from attending classes and university events until disciplinary proceedings are resolved. Those students also may face expulsion.
