Definition of a Curse
• curse (noun) a prayer or invocation for harm or injury to come upon one; evil or misfortune that comes as if in response to imprecation or as retribution; a cause of great harm or misfortune.†
• curse (verb) to use profanely insolent language against, blaspheme; to call upon divine or supernatural power to send injury upon; to execrate in fervent and often profane terms; to bring great evil upon, afflict. †
When a curse is placed on someone, the purpose is to cause injury and destruction—sometimes to the point of death.

At the top of this page I have added a a link to a very long list of scriptures referencing one's mouth - either how to speak or how not to speak. After identifying this long list of scriptures it is obvious that God knew the tongue would be one of the greatest problems man would have. The words we speak can either be a blessing or they can be a cursing - to others or to oneself.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Proverbs 18:21
Most often we speak without any thought of what is coming out of our mouths. We are conditioned from society to speak lingo which is frequently an abomination to God. When people use the common 4-letter words and the like they are belittling to themselves. People think they are looking good in front of their friends or it makes them feel like a big person to say such words and there is no civil law against it. However, using these 4-letter words makes a person look cheap, uncouth, no culture or class, uneducated. What is more important than that is how it effects one's relationship with Jesus Christ - one's personal relationship and the witness to others. We have many observers and when they see a person proclaiming to be a Christian but talking like the rest of the world, then they become disappointed and discouraged because why would they want what they see?
If Jesus were physically standing in front of you, hanging out with you for a day, such as we see in the movie "The Perfect Stranger," would you still be using those same 4-letter words? I bet you would not! Let me say right now, you do not see Him, but He is with you and standing beside you - hanging out with you everyday. He hears how you speak with others. He see's your witness.
No man is perfect, except Jesus Christ but the meaning of being a Christian is to be a "follower" of Jesus Christ. The Christian walk is about a life of learning to live like Christ. The Bible teaches us to speak as He spoke and that requires thinking about every word that comes out of your mouth.
The heart of the righteous studieth how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things. Proverbs 15:28
When our brother is in the wrong, we are to tell him first in private (Matthew 18:15-17). We are also taught to love others. Part of loving others is holding our Christian brothers and sisters accountable for their actions and the words coming out of their mouths.
I personally do not see the connection with "good gosh" or "darn" as Betty Miller talks about below, but I am referring to the stronger profane words. If you sit around listening to foul-mouthed talk everyday, then you are feeding your spirit filth. If you assemble yourself with other Christian believers then you become accountable to each other. Reading the Bible, listening to praise and worship music, talking to God feeds clean and godly things into your spirit, into your mind, and into your heart. For what comes out of the mouth was first planted in the heart.
Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the outflowings of life. Proverbs 4:23
"O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Matthew 12:34
Foul talk comes from Lucifer. God never spoke that way, but the devil does!!! If you are dealing with issues of the tongue, then you need to get on your knees before God and ask him to help you, even deliver that foul mouth spirit from you, and ask God to help you speak words of hope, love, encouragment, and blessing for yourself and others.
